Superb points for camera and editing. Also notably fine
direction (Kathryn Bigelow) and acting (Ray Fiennes, Angela
Basset, Juliette Lewis). A well-constructed,
constantly-on-the-move thriller that keeps us keen on the way to the New
Year of the New Millennium.
The kicks from the virtual
reality make more sense than they did in Douglas Trumbull's
Brainstorm and the tale is better too. The time keeps ticking
and the future in L.A. seems so much like the present, only
more so; what I mean is, political murders and racial riots
are still the menu of the day. Unfortunately, the makers seem
to throw in the towel at the end of the film and choose for a
happy ending instead of leaving the audience with a chill
which might have made this film a piece of lasting cinema
history. Despite this lapse of judgment, well worth seeing.
