Has anybody here seen Terrence Malick?

March 1998

  • Has anybody here seen Terrence Malick? The elusive man of many hotels who usually lives an elusive life in L.A. has been reported to have shot his latest feature (great to know you're back, Terry), The Thin Red Line, in Australia. If anyone knows where The Green Hartnett might be able to touch ground with Mr. Malick, please contact us.

  • Place your bets, folks, cause the 70th annual Academy Awards© will be taking place on March 23rd. From the looks of things "Titanic" may mop up many of the statuettes on offer this year with the largest grossing film ever made. Always an event to look forward to, it always means a long late night and early dawn for those of us viewing from the European end of the world. Still, who's complaining? Roll out the red carpet and let the games begin!

  • Body & City (Lichaam & Stad) is the intriguing title of an installation of designer Jeroen de Vries to focus on the work of photographer and cineast Johan van der Keuken. It will be on display at the Balie Theater on the Leidseplein in Amsterdam. Among the busy schedule of events (including films and discussions) is a live performance by the Willem Breuker Collective with a presentation of their latest CD "Music for his films."

  • The North Holland Youth Orchestra will be performing such film music as Aaron Copland's suite from "The Red Pony," Bernard Herrmann's suite from "Fahrenheit 451" and 3 parts from John William's score for "Schindler's List" in the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam on March 15th, as well as in Zandvoort on March 7th and Hoorn on March 14th.

  • Glerum CS Art and Antique Auctioneers, located at Westeinde 12 in The Hague, will be auctioning off a private collection of Film posters on March the 17th. French, Italian, German, Dutch and American posters from all genres will be on offer. I wonder if St. Patrick will attend.

  • Harold Lloyd's The Freshman (1925) will be screened four times in Holland with a soundtrack scored and conducted by Sir Carl Davis: Sunday, March 29th, in Den Bosch at the Theater aan de Parade; Tuesday, March 30th, in The Hague at the Dr. Anton Philipszaal; Tuesday, March 31st, in Utrecht at the Vredenburg Music Center; Wednesday, the 1st of April at the Theater Carre in Amsterdam (Let Harold be your April fool!). The Willem Breuker Collective will be warming up the audiences beforehand.
